A Few Cook Islands Accommodation Tips
Don’t get me wrong, the Cook Islands are stunning, but booking accommodation here, well that’s another story. Because these islands are so small, and there are so many visitors, the Cook Islands can be a nightmare to book for. Keep in mind accommodation prices here are a lot higher, considering what you get, especially compared to most other islands in the South Pacific. Below are a few of my top Cook Islands travel tips for booking accommodation.
- Book early in high season (June–September), especially for resorts, where rooms (especially as large/family rooms) can be limited.
- Self-contained units can save you money on food – groceries are pricey but still cheaper than eating out three times a day.
- Rarotonga is a great place for backpackers, but don’t expect many hostels – there is only really a few hostel-style places in the Cook Islands, which are good, but can take some research to find online.
- If you’re travelling without a car, stay in Muri or Avarua for better walkability and access to cafes, restaurants, and markets.
Budget Travellers ($40–$100 NZD per night)
Budget accommodation in the Cook Islands is relatively limited compared to other island destinations – but it does still exist. You’ll mostly find basic guesthouses, beach cabins, and older-style apartments that are perfectly fine if you’re happy with simplicity (which can be a little rough around the edges). Don’t expect modern amenities (this is a luxury in the Cook Islands anyway), but on the other hand you can expect warm hospitality and awesome locations if you do your research.
The average budget traveller should plan to spend $40-$100 on accommodation in the Cook Islands. Rarotonga is the only island budget travellers typically go, with Aitutaki being in a higher price bracket. Despite not being the most forward place for budget travellers to visit, the Cook Islands’ layout and people far outweigh this.
The Best Places to Stay on A Budget
- Rarotonga Backpackers – The best hostel/backpackers on Rarotonga, with multiple sites around the island, consisting of dorms and bungalows.
- The Islander Hotel – A hotel in Avarua which is very popular with budget travellers, splitting time between accommodation, and as a hotel near Rarotonga Airport. I wouldn’t spend your whole trip here.
- Aroa Beachside Inn – On a beautiful stretch of beach on the east coast, and great value for a resort on a budget.
- Ranginui’s Retreat (Aitutaki) – The cheapest you’re going to get in Aitutaki, plus these studio bungalows are right on the beach and nicely furnished.

Mid-Range Travellers ($100–$300 NZD per night)
If you’re willing to spend a bit more, the Cook Islands really starts to shine in the mid-range category. The three main types of mid range accommodation here are resorts, self-contained/serviced bungalows and Airbnbs/holiday homes. This is where you’ll find best value for money, especially in Rarotonga, and mid-range options often come with free breakfast, kayaks, and snorkelling gear etc. Just keep in mind that the sweet spot for prices is usually above the South Pacific average.
Mid-range stays are perfect for couples, honeymooners on a budget, or small families who want comfort and a few resort-style perks without the big price tag. My preferred options would be serviced/self contained bungalows, which feel more like a boutique resort, have resort amenities, but you get your own kitchen and more space. In general, look closer at the location and amenities, read reviews, and don’t judge photos online too hard.
The Best Mid Range Places to Stay
- Lagoon Breeze Villas – These self-contained serviced bungalows have everything you need, yet still include daily breakfast and resort amenities. An absolute gem, but Lagoon Breeze sells out fast!
- The Edgewater Resort – The biggest resort on Rarotonga, on a good beach, usually very good prices, and very popular with families due to their amenities. I would recommend if you don’t mind staying in a busy resort, and have kids.
- Palm Grove – Another great set of bungalows that are on the beach front (a fantastic spot on the south coast). Comes with breakfast and resort style amenities.
- Muri Shores – Well priced beach bungalows on Muri Beach, with a fantastic view and location.
- Muri Beach Resort – A quiet all-round resort on Muri Beach, and a very popular one, set in peaceful gardens. You’ll need to get in early here too.
- Tai Marino Beach Bungalows (Aitutaki) – Fantastic beach bungalows, with everything you need, and on the beach. Some of the best rated hosts in the Cook Islands run this place too.

Luxury Travellers ($450+ NZD per night)
If you’re dreaming of a bucket list escape, accompanied by boutique hotels which are truly one of a kind, the Cook Islands excels. These islands have some absolutely beautiful luxury options – especially on Aitutaki. While they are not as resort-heavy as some tropical destinations, the Cook Islands offer an intimate, high-quality experience with personal touches, rather than huge, impersonal hotels. I don’t think you could curate a better luxury holiday anywhere else in the South Pacific (except for French Polynesia!)
Luxury accommodation in the Cook Islands is perfect for honeymooners, romantic getaways, or anyone celebrating a special occasion. Expect beachfront villas, tailored service, seclusion, private decks, infinity pools, and the Cook Islands’ best restaurants and bars. Just please book luxury stays early – many of the best resorts have fewer than 20 rooms!
The Best Luxury Places to Stay
- Pacific Resort Rarotonga – Arguably the best all round resort on Rarotonga, with mid-range to luxury prices, on Muri Beach. Ideal for couples or families who want full service.
- Te Manava Luxury Villas – Some of the best luxury self-contained villas on Rarotonga. Located on Muri Beach, with some incredible room options.
- Little Polynesian Resort – A small adults only resort on the south coast with notably great food/drink, and dreamy views.
- Tamanu Beach Resort (Aitutaki) – The best all round resort on Aitutaki for the ultimate escape on a breathtaking slice of beach
